Gunther Abuja (English major/French minor studies) is director of the Austrian Centre for Language Competence. G. Abuja has many years of experience in Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) and intercultural learning (EVLANG) and has done extensive work within the field of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, the European Language Portfolio and Austrian Educational Standards. In the course of his 15-year-activities in the Austrian Centre extensive project management work as well as the design of supportive material for teachers (guides, concepts, etc.) were among his most prominent activities.
Current field of research/activities: international language policy of the Council of Europe, the European Centre for Modern Languages and the European Union. International cooperation with European language centres/institutions. Long-standing occupation in language pre- and in-service teacher education for language innovation in Austria.

Mirela BARDI

My involvement in language teacher education dates back to my work as manager of the PROSPER project initiated by British Council Romania with the aim of upgrading the teaching of English in higher education institutions. From 1994 to 2002 my main responsibilities were to do with training university lecturers in communicative ESP methodology. Together, we engaged in many professional development activities such as textbook writing, classroom research and project evaluation research. The Master of Education I had completed at the University of Exeter, UK, was particularly relevant for my development as a trainer. In 2003 I completed my PhD in Applied Linguistics at the University of Lancaster, UK. I am currently senior lecturer at the University of Economics Bucharest where I teach mostly on MA programmes.

Elle a également été chargée des langues à la direction de l’Enseignement scolaire au ministère de l’Education nationale.

| Carmel Mary Coonan is an associate professor of Glottodidactics at Ca’ Foscari University Venice, Italy. She teaches ‘Bilingual education/CLIL’, ‘Research methods in Glottodidactics’ and ‘Language Education’ in the Faculty of Foreign Languages and Literature of Ca’ Foscari University and ‘Methodology of foreign language teaching’ and ‘Language Education’ at the SSIS (Scuola di Specializzazione Interateneo per la Formazione degli Insegnanti di Scuola Secondaria). Her fields of interest concern bilingual and multilingual education, psychological aspects of language education, the methodology for the promotion of the early learning of foreign languages in formal settings and, more recently, disabilities and foreign language learning and teaching. |

Paola DE MATTEIS

Paola De Matteis has many years of experience as a teacher of German as a foreign language and as a teacher educator at SSIS-Veneto, University Ca' Foscari-Venice (Italy). Teacher trainer and teacher of German as foreign language in upper secondary school, she has worked on several EU Socrates/LLP projects. The Master of Counselling and Educational Research at the University of Venice was particularly relevant for her development as a trainer. She is currently a research doctorate in Applied Linguistics at the Department of Linguistics, Venice University (Italy). Her present interests include tertiary language learning didactics and methodology (Learning German as a foreing language after English). She has published two school textbooks on German literature and a number of articles on topics related to foreign language teacher education, learner autonomy and CLIL.

Geraldine LUDBROOK

Geraldine Ludbrook is a researcher at the University of Venice, Italy, where she teaches both undergraduate and postgraduate courses. She is also a teacher trainer at the Veneto teacher education institute (SSIS). She is currently a PhD student in Applied Linguistics at the Department of Linguistics and English Language, Lancaster University. Geraldine co-edits a series of textbooks, published in Venice, for the teaching of foreign languages for specific purposes. She is currently working on a project for the development of a test to certify the L2 proficiency of CLIL teachers in Italy.

Christine DEVELOTTE
Title of the workshop: Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in language teacher training

Christine Develotte is a researcher in applied linguistics. She is currently a professor of Communication at the Institut National de Recherche Pédagogique in Lyon and a member of the ICAR research lab. For the last ten years her main research interests have been linked to computer-mediated communication (CMC). Her research includes two aspects: the semio-linguistic aspect of online communication and the social aspect, (focusing on the analysis of human behavior). Since 2002, the data has been taken mostly from fieldwork conducted in classrooms where distance learning and teaching interactions have been emphasised, particularly through her project Le français en (première) ligne.

Mirjam Egli Cuenat (1966) est titulaire d’un doctorat en linguistique appliquée. 1993-1998 collaboration au projet de recherche « littératie » à l’Université de Bâle (Suisse), coopération avec l’Université Paris V. Depuis 1998 active dans la formation d’enseignants du français langue étrangère (langue et linguistique) pour plusieurs institutions suisses. De 2000 à 2005 responsable d’un centre régional d’examens DELF-DALF. De 2005 à 2008 collaboratrice scientifique auprès de la Conférence suisse des directeurs de l’instruction publique (CDIP), diversers missions la coordination de l’enseignement des langues au niveau national, représentante de la Suisse auprès du CELV à Graz. Depuis 2001 associée à différents projets de la Division des politiques linguistiques du Conseil de l’Europe ; depuis 2008 collaboration au Guide pour l’élaboration et la mise en œuvre de curricula pour une éducation plurilingue et interculturelle.
Actuellement, Mirjam Egli Cuenat travaille comme consultante indépendante. Principaux domaines d’intérêt: plurilinguisme et curriculum, compétence langagière des enseignants, didactique du plurilinguisme, acquisition de la littératie en contextes plurilingues.

Anne-Brit FENNER
Title of the workshop: Intercultural competence of language learners and how to train it

Assistant professor of English didactics (education), Department of Foreign Languages, University of Bergen, Norway. Anne-Brit Fenner has coordinated a number of projects at the Centre for Modern Languages, Graz, related to intercultural awareness. Her current research in this field focuses on the role of literature in EFL learning and dialogic approaches to literary texts. She has been a member of the project team who developed the European Portfolio for Student Teachers of Languages (EPOSTL) and is currently a member of the coordinating team for EPOSTL2. Anne-Brit Fenner has participated in developing Norwegian National Curricula for English and has written English textbooks for schools. She has published a number of articles on various topics related to foreign language teacher education, in particular intercultural competence, learner autonomy and the role of literature in foreign language learning.

Neus Figueras est Licenciée en philologie anglaise et Docteur avec Mention Européenne en Sciences de l’Éducation par l’Université de Barcelone. Elle est chef de la section de l’enseignement des langues du Département d’Éducation de la Generalitat de Catalogne depuis 1996.
Elle a formé des enseignants dans des universités et dans des institutions espagnoles et européennes. Elle a publié des articles et des ouvrages sur l’évaluation et l’utilisation du Cadre européen commun de référence (CECR) et a participé à des projets européens sur l’évaluation. Elle collabore actuellement avec le Conseil de l’Europe en tant qu’experte de l’utilisation du CECR et elle est coauteur du Manuel pour relier des examens au CECR (Conseil de l’Europe 2009) .
Première présidente d’ EALTA, Association européenne pour l’évaluation des langues, (2004 -2007, elle en est actuellement membre expert.

Barry JONES

Barry Jones was, until his recent retirement, Lecturer in Education: Modern Languages at Cambridge University, where was responsible for and contributed to three Modern Languages’ teacher-training courses, the Secondary PGCE, the PGCE for Middle Schools and the Primary Graduate Teacher MFL programmes. He continues to train student-teachers part-time in the Faculty and, with a pan-european group, is working on the use of the European Portfolio for Student Teachers of Languages for the Council of Europe.
He has published books and articles on aspects of Modern Language teaching and learning. Recent publications include Boys’ Performance in Modern Foreign Languages (2001) with Gwenneth Jones, You speak, they speak: focus on target language use (2002) with Halliwell and Holmes, It makes you think: creating engagement, offering challenges (2004) with Swarbrick, Boosting boys’ motivation in MFL (2005) all published by the Centre for Information on Language Teaching, London. Michael KELLY

Michael Kelly est professeur de français à l’université de Southampton. Il joue un rôle actif dans l’évolution des perspectives et des pratiques concernant l’enseignement des langues et la diversité linguistique et culturelle au Royaume-Uni et en Europe. Il a dirigé la publication d’un Profil européen pour la formation des enseignants de langues étrangères, qui propose un cadre de référence aux décideurs des politiques linguistiques ainsi qu’aux formateurs d’enseignants de langues. Il dirige un service national de soutien pour les enseignants de langues au Royaume-Uni (Subject Centre for Languages, Linguistics and Area Studies), qui comprend un programme d’éducation professionnelle au niveau des régions anglaises (Links into Languages) et un programme de promotion de l’étude des langues tant à l’école qu’à l’université (Routes into Languages). Il est rédacteur en chef de la revue francophone Synergies Royaume-Uni et Irlande, et de la Revue européenne de politique linguistique.

| Prof. Dr. Hanna Komorowska, full professor of applied linguistics and language teaching at the Institute of English, University of Warsaw, works in the field of pre- and in-service teacher training.. After the fall of communism she was heading the Expert Committee designing the reform of foreign language teaching in Poland as well as the teacher education reform. Former vice-President of Warsaw University, member of the ELTJ editorial board and the Polish delegate for the Modern Languages Project Group of the Council of Europe, now member of the EU High Level Group on Multilingualism, consultant to the European Centre of Modern Languages in Graz, head of the Polish edition of the European Language Label and co-author of the European Portfolio for Student Teachers of Languages, she publishes widely in the field of FLT methodology and teacher education. |

Ildikó LAZAR

Ildikó Lázár is a lecturer at the Department of English Language Pedagogy of Eötvös Loránd University in Budapest, Hungary. She obtained an MA degree in English and French Language and Literature and a PhD in Language Pedagogy at the same university. She is a teacher educator, teaching English Language Development, EFL Methodology and Intercultural Communication courses to pre- and in-service English teachers. She has also been coordinating international research and training projects for the Council of Europe. She wrote her doctoral thesis on the role and status of intercultural communication training in teacher education in Hungary. She has published articles and co-authored and edited books on the methodology of developing and assessing intercultural communicative competence. Her research interests also include issues related to benefiting from linguistic and cultural diversity in the classroom.

Charles Max is a Professor in Educational Sciences, specializing in the learning sciences focusing on learning with educational media at the University of Luxembourg. Having a background in early learning and special needs education within multicultural contexts with a ten years record as a practitioner in the field (teacher, inspector), he is a specialist in the area of socio-cultural theory, activity theory and developmental work research, focusing on competence development, the monitoring of professional growth and the implementation of teaching development in diversified settings. He is the scientific head and co-conceptioner of the innovative Bachelor’s programme in educational sciences, Bachelor en Sciences de l’Education, a programme for initial teacher education and has been active in the set-up of the research priority programs in the Educational Sciences at the University of Luxembourg (« Learning for Life in the 21st century », « Building Excellence in Education ») since its creation in 2003. He is the co-founder of the « Unit for sociocultural Research on Learning and Development » at the UL and is heading the working group on science learning for the Luxembourgish pre-primary, primary and lower secondary curricula planning.

| Dr Olga Medvedeva studied philology and foreign languages at Moscow State University of Linguistics, where she obtained a PhD in English linguistics. She has worked in adult, vocational and higher education at various institutions and companies. She has been extensively involved in teaching materials and tests design ( co-author of several textbooks and distance learning programmes); she is an experienced teacher trainer. Since 2001 Olga Medvedeva has worked on several EU Socrates programme projects aimed at promoting linguistic and cultural diversity in Europe, introducing innovative teaching and learning methods, creating up-to-date learning tools. Mirosław Pawlak received his doctoral and postdoctoral degrees in applied linguistics from Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, Poland. He is Professor of English and Head of the English Department at the Faculty of Pedagogy and Fine Arts of Adam Mickiewicz University in Kalisz as well as the Institute of Modern Languages of the State School of Higher Professional Education in Konin. Mirosław Pawlak’s main areas of interest include second language acquisition theory and research, form-focused instruction, classroom discourse, communication strategies, learner autonomy and pronunciation teaching. His most recent book publication is The place of form-focused instruction in the foreign language classroom (2006, Kalisz–Poznań: Adam Mickiewicz University Press). He has also edited collections of articles on learner autonomy, language policies of the Council of Europe, form-focused instruction and individual learner differences.

Richard ROSSNER

Richard Rossner is Chief Executive of EAQUALS, the European Association for Quality Language Services. EAQUALS currently has over 100 Accredited Member institutions and 20 Associate Members in 21 countries. Accreditation is based on a rigorous three-yearly inspection. Richard is qualified as a teacher of German and French at Oxford but was involved in English language teaching from 1967 until 2005. After 10 years in Mexico as teacher, teacher trainer and manager, he was appointed editor of ELT Journal. In 1984, he joined Bell International as a school manager, then as a senior manager. He was Chief Executive of Bell from 1998 to 2005. Richard Rossner represents EAQUALS on ISO committees and on a Council of Europe Working group. He is also an EAQUALS inspector.

Else Ryen is associate professor at the Department of Linguistics and Scandinavian Studies, University of Oslo where her teaching commitments are in the area of bilingualism and second language acquisition.
She has a long standing experience as teacher educator and has contributed to several publications dealing with class room studies, teacher qualifications in multilingual and multicultural settings and Norwegian as a second language.
Else Ryen is also adviser at The National Centre of Multicultural Education (NAF0) where she has taken part in developing assessment tools and guideline materials for teachers who teach basic Norwegian to pupils with mother tongues other than Norwegian.

Miquel STRUBELL

Miquel Strubell (Oxford 1949) holds degrees in Psychology from the universities of Oxford, London and Autònoma de Barcelona. He worked in the language planning department of the government of Catalonia from 1980 to 1999, in the promotion of the Catalan language. Since 1999 he teaches sociolinguistics at the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya, and specialises in minority language policies. He was a member of the drafting team for the OSCE High Commissioner on National Minorities' "Oslo Recommendations on the language rights of national minorities" (1998) and the "Lund Recommendations on the effective participation of national minorities in public life" (1999). He has coordinated a number of European projects, including Euromosaic (1993-1997) and Drofolta (Detecting and Removing Obstacles to Foreign Language Teaching Abroad, 2005-2006); he was one of the authors of the SMiLE report (Support for Minority Languages in Europe, 2002) and the DiTLANG report (Diversity in foreign language teaching the countries of the EU, 2006-2007). He has also written reports for the European Parliament. He is the author and co-author of several books and has written over 100 published papers.

Teresa TINSLEY

Teresa Tinsley has been Director of Communications at CILT, the National Centre for Languages since 2003 and is responsible for the strategic development of the organisation’s communications and marketing including its eight websites, its programme of national events and exhibitions, and its well-established publishing operations (which she has led since 2001). She directed the ELAN research project on the economic value of languages to European business, which CILT undertook for the European Commission, and co-led the ECML project VALEUR (Valuing all languages in Europe). Before joining CILT she worked for the Spanish Embassy Education Office and was instrumental in developing the promotion of Spanish as a foreign language in the UK. She is the author of several books and regularly contributes to press and journals.

Gudrun ZIEGLER

Prior to her appointment in September 2006 as Associate Professor to the Research Unit for Sociocultural Research on Learning and Development, Faculty of Education at the University of Luxembourg, Dr. Gudrun Ziegler worked as a post-doc (2004-2006) within the area of grammar-interaction-acquisition (Maître-Assistante, Université de Neuchâtel, Switzerland) and teaching-learning of second/foreign languages (Habilitandin, Universität München LMU, Germany). Holding the "autorisation à diriger des recherches", Gudrun Ziegler is specialising in the research domains of Plurilinguism, Language Acquisition and Applied Linguistics and directs the trilingual, two-years research Master program “Learning and Development in Multilingual and Multicultural Contexts" at the University of Luxembourg (http://www.multi-learn.org). Dr. Gudrun Ziegler is also co-responsible for the DICA-lab research group, focussing on learning processes and development within conditions characterised by diversity, multilingualism, multimodality and multi-mediality (http://www.dica-lab.org). She directs and co-manages a number of international research projects, financed on a national- or European-level some of which privately funded. She regularly publishes in international peer-reviewed journals, sustains several international cooperations (CODI-net, Précis du Plurilinguisme), functions as an expert on both a national a well as international level (e.g. UNESCO, Multilingual Education) and engages in different international ventures relating to the developmental stages / conditions of young children and professional training (e.g, teachers) with regard to the emergent (linguistic) needs in a multicultural and multilingual setting. She is co-editing the peer-reviewed online journal “ForumSprache” (Hueber Verlag) and has been been completing more than 30 international scientific contributions since 2006.
